Yass

About Yass NSW

Sited on the Southern Tablelands, Yass is a town in NSW, Australia. The town’s name is said to have originated from the native work for ‘running water’. There are various events held in Yass including the Arts and Crafts Festival, the Pride of Erin Festival, and the Yass Show each year. There is a main street in the town that is quite special in that it has some fine examples of 19th Century buildings, including the post pubs that have since been converted into other buildings. The media mogul Rupert Murdoch owns property close to the town. The town of Yass is located about 60 kilometers from Canberra and 280 kilometers southwest of Sydney. The river of the same name passes the town. Europeans did not arrive in Yass until the 1820s by way of an expedition. It was about ten years later before the settlement begun to spring up. A couple of famous poets made Yass their home. The sheep stud known as Merryville was established here in the early 1900s. There was much debate over the introduction of a railway to the area, where locals were annoyed that it did not pass much closer to the town. In the end, a light railway was built that ran until 1988. The railway station is now a museum.
