About Pyrmont

Pyrmont is not far from the center of Sydney, NSW, Australia. The CBD is about 2 kilometers away. The area of Pyrmont has a high population density compared to any other city in the country. It used to be an area that primed itself with shipbuilding and had a waterfront that was heavily reliant on industry. Today, it has been modernized and redeveloped as a fashionable residential and administrative center. Prior to the arrival of people from Europe, the area was the home of the Eora tribe. They named the area ‘Pirrama’, a name that still exists today as the name of the main thoroughfare along the waterfront. There was a freshwater spring in the area that was named after a similar one found near the German city of Hanover. The land changed hands among early settlers for a few pounds or alcohol. The rock of the land was sandstone, and this was a valuable commodity for building. Sandstone quarries operated until the First World War in the area and were used in some iconic buildings in Sydney. The early settlers saw the first church established here in 1864. The reduction in the demand for ship building and general decline in heavy industry caused significant harm to the area in the 19th and 20th Century.
