Griffith

Griffith

Griffith lies in the southwestern part of NSW, Australia. Walter Burley Griffin, the same man who designed the nearby town of Leeton and the country’s capital city of Canberra, designed the city. It was established in 1916 as part of an irrigation project to supply water to the farmlands in the west of the state. However, the city was named after the first minister of the states’ public works, Sir Arthur Griffith. It became a city in 1987. You can arrive in Griffith by road from Canberra and Sydney via the Burley Griffin Way on the Hume Highway. From Melbourne, you would use the Newell Highway. The city has only recently had traffic lights installed at the crossroads of Wakaden Street and Burrell Place. Italians who worked on the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area initially populated the area in the early day and worked on the river’s steamboats. People of Italian origin still make up a significant number of the 16,000 people who live here. There are many wineries influenced by the Italian residents.
