Glen Innes

Glen Innes

Glen Innes lies on the Northern Tablelands, NSW, Australia. It is situated where the Gwydir Highway and New England Highway. About 5,173 people live here. Originally, Glen Innes and the areas nearby were owned by the native Ngarabal people. As the Europeans came and settled in the area, the Ngarabal people suffered from disease, poisoning and massacres as they had to make way for the sprawling settlements. However, many Ngarabal people still live in the area today and display many aspects of their traditional way of life. It was in 1838 that the area was used as a main sheep run and squatters began to take up residence here. The area was called Furracabad Station until the depression of the 1840s. The lands changed hands to Major Archibald Clunes Innes to which the area is generally accepted as to where the name came. It was Archibald Mosman who is believed to have named the land after Innes, although the land later changed hands, first to the bank, then to two private owners up until then.
