Blackburn

Blackburn

Blackburn covers an area of about 6 square kilometers and is about 17 kilometers from Melbourne. Lying to the east of Melbourne, Blackburn has uncertain beginnings. It is thought that the area may have been named after James Blackburn who was the main designer of the Yan Yean Reservoir. Bounded by the Middleborough Road to the west, and Springfield Road to the north, the eastern edge lies along the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1840s. It was soon developed into small farms as the forested areas were cleared.

The current site of the Blackburn Hotel was originally where the Traveller’s Rest Hotel was built in 1861. During the 1880s, various brick works and quarries provided ample building materials as the town grew in size. The railway station was built in 1882, and a school later in 1889. Further development ceased until after the Second World War. The manmade lake was built in 1889 and became a popular visitor attraction by the late Victorian period. There are local bushland parks, Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and Blackburn Creeklands, which provide opportunities for local residents and visitors to enjoy the great outdoors. For sports enthusiasts, you have Australian Rules Football teams and local cricket, soccer, netball and tennis and basketball teams playing on local sports fields.

Things To Do

Blackburn Lake Sanctuary

Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is a public park that covers some 75 acres that was established in 1889. It features many walking trails through the bushlands. The lake was formed when the Kooyongkoot Creek was dammed to create the lake that is within the sanctuary. The lake has had various uses over the years that led to it becoming rather polluted by the 1960s. Further regeneration and additional planting in the sanctuary has helped improve the situation. Today, the park is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, such as possums and Pacific Black Ducks and is well used by visitors and residents.
