A bit about Balwyn

A suburb of Melbourne, Balwyn lies about 10 kilometers east of the city center. A place with leafy streets, it offers its residents a high quality lifestyle in a very desirable part of the city. The area was bought in the 1850s by a commercial editor of The Argus newspaper, Andrew Murray, and he named his house Balwyn that means ‘home of the vine’. His house was located on the land now home of a prestigious private school. Its first church opened in 1872. By 1880, Balwyn had its first town center close to the intersection of Whitehorse Road and Balwyn Road that had some shops, a mechanic’s institute and a blacksmith. A railway line was opened in 1891. It opened for a couple of years and closed in 1893, and was later reopened and closed again by 1930. The Balwyn Cinema opened in 1930, and was converted into a multiplex and recently restored foyer shows the original flooring. The area is fairly affluent and is one of Melbourne’s most exclusive suburbs with some grand mansions found in Reid Estate.
